More Than Half Of World Doesn’t Have Broadband Accessibility: WBA

Broadband Accessibility

The report, which plans to identify the quantity of unconnected citizens living in urban areas around the world, in both developed and emerging markets, has found the variety of urban unconnected is greatest in Asia Pacific regions and the Middle East. Yet connectivity remains a vital problem in Europe and North America.

Based on the findings, Europe has the lowest percent of urban unconnected at 17%, Africa and the Middle East has the greatest proportion of urban unconnected citizens at 82%. It said that London is the most linked leading global city, while Lagos is the least linked city (88.3%).

Nearly a quarter (23%) of individuals in North America do not have broadband connection despite having the world’s greatest average monthly income.

The study shows that amounts of income are linked to broadband adoption rates, but other aspects play a part for example age, access to computer literacy and computers.

The deficiency of urban connectivity can be attributed to the high price of fixed and cellular services, from low amounts of income to amount technological and political challenges, the report said.

“There’s a clear split between the digital haves and the digital have nots. And while this split normally reflects socioeconomic trends all over the world, there are astonishingly high amounts of urban unconnected citizens in important cities,” said Shrikant Shenwai, CEO of the Wireless Broadband Alliance.

We’re thus calling on cities, authorities, operators and technology firms, including Facebook, Google and Microsoft, to come together now to help provide affordable, sustainable connectivity for everyone, everywhere,” Shenwai said.
