Cable Continues to Command US Broadband Subscriber Adds

Based on the most recent data by Leichtman Research, the top cable companies added about net accessions viewed by the business. broadband subscribers in the quarter, or 99% of the 1,065,000 By comparison, the top phone companies added only 10,000 web broadband subscribers for the quarter, thanks to the ongoing loss of DSL users.

A number of these users are in marketplaces the phone companies do not need to update. So these users are being deliberately driven away by slow speeds, apathy, and cost increases in the hopes they will flee to notably more rewarding (read: use limited) wireless broadband service. That is clearly a tremendous blessing to cable subscribers, who face less competition than ever before in a number of these marketplaces.

“Broadband in the US keeps growing, with cable providers accounting for 111% of the three million internet broadband additions in the last year.”

The information also goes a ways in describing why minor TV subscriber increases are being seen by the cable sector while television market share is lost by telco and satellite TV suppliers. Many of these DSL customers are seeking faster broadband speeds, so they are heading to TV and cable packages — which are typically priced on promotion for less than broadband standalone. As such, the growing monopoly on the broadband side of the aisle of cable is paying huge dividends on enticing telcoTV defectors and previous satellite back to the conventional cable fold.
