U.S. government tells Windows customers to delete QuickTime expected to hacking risks

Apple has pulled support for QuickTime on Windows, the video and sound applications that had been popular to play with other Internet media clips and film previews.
Apple’s last QuickTime upgrade for Windows arrived in January, and the business had been occasionally repairing bugs in the last several years.
But Apple (AAPL, Tech30) has not dedicated much effort to QuickTime over the previous decade.

QuickTime for Windows is oddly still accessible for downloading, and will continue to operate. But DHS and Apple encouraged the software to be uninstalled by Windows customers.
“Using unsupported applications may raise the hazards from viruses and other security hazards,” DHS said in its alert. “The only decrease accessible would be to uninstall QuickTime for Windows.”
Security firm TrendMicro blogged about the QuickTime susceptibility in a post titled “Urgent call to actions.”
TrendMicro said it’s not aware of any attacks that were made as an outcome of the QuickTime security bug, but it urged deleting the software anyhow.
Apple has created a page on its web site that details the best way to uninstall QuickTime for Windows.
In the last several years, on-line media platforms have mostly replaced QuickTime, including Netflix, Facebook and YouTube.
