Microsoft exploits startups to increase Internet access globally

The Affordable Access Initiative problems startups which are focusing on technology which can be used to enhance Internet access to communities with grants and prizes.

In this round of financing, 12 companies in 11 states have been successful, Microsoft announced on Tuesday.

The initiative plans to “democratize access to the Internet through grants, commercial partnerships, linking new leaders and community involvement,” according to the company.

In order to meet the requirements for a grant, Microsoft needs to see new, advanced technology which utilizes resources including TV white spaces — fresh broadcast medium frequencies — to expand Internet connectivity, along with sustainable and scalable business models alternatives.

The firms which have snagged a grant come from a variety of nations across the world.

In addition to financial support, Microsoft has guaranteed mentor and peer systems, the company’s own research & development team accessible on call, and virtual seminars per annum.

“To further empower individuals and organization in communities profiting from the Affordable Access Initiative. Microsoft Philanthropies will make digital literacy, online security and computer science instruction systems accessible through its worldwide YouthSpark initiative, along with cloud merchandise contributions and training for nonprofits,” the technology giant says.

One of the Affordable Access Initiative grant receivers are a variety of connectivity options businesses from the US, India, Malawi, Nigeria and the Philippines, India’s Zaya Learning Labs and electricity options businesses New Sun Road from Uganda and African Renewable Energy Provider from Rwanda.
