Google ‘News Laboratory’ to sharpen abilities being reported by Internet Age

Google on Monday launched an on-line laboratory where journalists can learn or sharpen Internet Age reporting abilities.

The News Lab assignment will be to collaborate with entrepreneurs and journalists to use technology inventions to coverage news, laboratory manager Steve Grove said, in a blog post.

“Now, journalists all over the world can get tutorials on these products created specially for newsrooms.”

Offerings at the News Lab home page contained lessons in research, distribution, reporting, and using analytics tools.

Google was also working with partners on software “focused on envisioning the future of news and tips, along with on empowering new voices in the media.” Associates contained the Hacks/Hackers grassroots network of technologists and journalists using a stated mission of re-envisioning the future of news coverage.

News Lab was billed as a worldwide effort started with teams in America, France, Germany as well as Britain.

YouTube last week announced plans for a “newswire” of eyewitness videos as well as another job on videos associated with social justice and human rights.

“With the Newswire, we expect to supply journalists with an invaluable resource to find news video around major events, and to emphasize eyewitness video that provides new perspectives on significant news stories.”

The initiative will draw on user-given videos on YouTube such as those that have been significant sources for occasions such as demonstrations and the Arab Spring rebellions in Ferguson, Missouri.

In bringing about justice in police brutality cases in America, the very first job will learn more about the effect of bystander videos.
