United Internet eyes city network purchases

The United Internet in Germany is trying to buy urban fiber optic networks to enlarge the national grid of Versatel, which it purchased this past year, its chief executive told Reuters.

Ralph Dommermuth said he was also looking for more acquisitions to strengthen its business programs unit, which it may record individually on the stock exchange, following the acquisition of Poland’s largest internet hoster home.pl.

“We’ll keep adding acquisitions but it will not revolutionize our company,” he said in a telephone interview on Thursday.

United Internet is the largest DSL copper cable broadband supplier after Deutsche Telekom in Germany. In addition, it competes with a number of cellular carriers and cable companies to provide services and internet access to businesses and consumers.

“We’ll keep purchasing city carriers to enlarge our network,” Dommermuth said.

After spending about 80 million euros on sales, advertising and smartphone subsidies to get more subscribers than anticipated in the first half United Internet raised its goal for cellular web customers.

Dommermuth said this company would continue to be core but wouldn’t be a focus for acquisitions.

In company programs including design and web hosting, Dommermuth said United Internet would be hard pressed to grow to the scale it needed organically, thus the notion to record shares in the company to finance future acquisitions.

He said United Internet needed to keep possession of the entire company if possible but would gain from having the capability to issue new shares at multiples of around 15 for company programs compared with approximately 10 for United Internet.
