Reddit blocked in Turkey?
According to this law, the government is permitted to prohibit sites that has pornographic content has pirated content or is critical of the very first President Mustafa Ataturk.
The Telecom Authority of Turkey (TIB) has formally supported the prohibition which came into effect on Friday. The statement says, “After technical analysis and legal thought on the basis of the Law Nr. 5651, MANAGEMENT MEASURE was chosen for this particular site (reddit.com) according to Choice Nr.
The Internet Law 5651 was passed back in 2007 and it’s been abused to prohibit other websites like Twitter along with YouTube previously. Happily the Turkish courts overturned both these prohibitions, however there’s no logic or reasoning given regarding why specific websites are prohibited. In the event of Reddit, NSFW threads on the site’s existence could potentially be a motive, but the authorities never have outright said that in its statement.
