Crawford, chief executive of London-based CentralNIC Group Plc, woke up in Sydney to learn the domain name powered by his business – .xyz – would host the web site of Google’s new firm, Alphabet Inc.
Google filed abc.xyz as Alphabet’s web site because alphabet.com is possessed by German automaker BMW.
The technology that powers the registry of domain names sanctioned by Icann, which manages the debut of new Internet addresses is provided by businesses like CentralNIC.
Google’s move to use .xyz is a powerful endorsement of these brand new domain names that offer users more choice and flexibility as the Internet grows larger. Enrollments on the .xyz domain name have grown by more than 27,000 since Google’s statement, according to ntldstats.com.
CentralNIC is the exclusive wholesaler for .xyz, definitely the most famous of the new domain names. It was created by 29-year old Daniel Negari, the most youthful registry operator of Icann.
Businesses like CentralNIC sell these domain names through retailers including MarkMonitor and GoDaddy Inc, a business owned by Thomson Reuters Corp.
Google purchased the rights to abc.xyz from MarkMonitor, which filed the address in March 2014.
CentralNIC will get a share of the yearly subscription that Google will pay to maintain the web site. Crawford declined to say how much his firm would make off abc.xyz.
Superior top level domains, like insurance.com, generally sell for hundreds of tens of thousands to millions of dollars in privately negotiated prices.
For example, we.com was purchased by Tencent, China’s biggest Internet service portal site, for $8 million (about Rs. 52 crores) before this month.
“I think that is the message that Google needed to get across: that Alphabet is the Internet business of the future.”
