Korean and Taiwanese companies are in the heart of Asia’s dynamic IP market

It’s as both areas have presented in recent months they have as much if not more patent marketplace dynamism than bigger neighbours Japan and the PRC looking like great time. The two authorities have a serious and long history of creating IP, and in both we’re seeing new versions when it comes to IP monetisation being examined.

There ’s a careful belief that competitive NPE declaration will continue to drop and this risk has peaked. Many others, however, are taking more of a delayandsee strategy, not least due to the substantial cost. That caution may be justified with the UPC deal now hanging in the balance.

In their own backyard, a larger body is cutting with M&An and patent deals. The clear recent example is Foxconn’s hit buy out of fighting Sharp after a sensational last minute re-discussion. Subsequently there’s the issue of cross-strait investment; there have been constant rumours technology firms on the isle lobbying to allow it to be simpler for them to do so, and of PRC things looking to put money into some of Taiwan’s business heavyweights. There’s definitely scope for increased deal flow between them both.

TSMC only last week provided a great example of patent strategies are shifting here. It declared a deal with WiLAN which saw a permit is obtained by the Taiwanese company to particular former Qimonda patents associated with semiconductor process technology in addition to 400 other WiLAN patents in an outright assignment. The move is indicative of new strategies being taken in Taiwanese business and in the NPE sector.

Our programme in Korea after this week will address many of the exact same business trends, especially with regards to local corporates will impact. But we saw the latest signals that Korean corporates, also, may be changing tack. This site covered NHN Entertainment, a games-focused spin off of net giant Naver, which came out talking tough about competitors including Facebook.

On that note, openly financed investment that is patent is an issue that’s high on the plan in this part of the world, especially in Korea. So there’s likely no city more suitable than Seoul to host a discussion of IP investment, which is just how we’ll be wrapping up on Friday. Stay tuned for reporting on all these issues through the week and no doubt many more.
