ISP now blocking online games in Morocco due to VoIP prohibition

Word is distributing this week that Maroc Telecom, among the biggest Internet providers in Morocco, has blocked access to Steam and many online games as it stiffens its present prohibition on VoIP (voice over IP) traffic.

The extent of the issue is however uncertain; multiple NeoGAF and Reddit users claim to be changed, though now Maroc Telecom took to Twitter to refuse (in Arabic and French) that it had limited access to online games.

For anyone outside of Morocco this outcry reflects a light on the state of the African nation’s accessibility to technologies and online games.

This week Maroc Telecom added a few more free on-line VoIP services to its “restricted” list, and that is when many people began whining about being unable to get servers for games like Dota 2 and Paladins.

Intriguingly, one NeoGAF user recorded evaluations in which they could ping Dota 2servers directly but were promptly kicked from any Dota 2 games they managed to get into, leading them to hypothesize the game client’s voice chat protocols are tripping Maroc Telecom to block or degrade the game’s on-line traffic enough to leave it unplayable.
