Internet Neutrality Stand to Be Finalised in a Few Months
The Indian telecom regulator is optimistic that it will not be unable to finalise perspectives on web neutrality in several months.
“The DoT (Department of Telecom) has sought all-inclusive perspective from us on web neutrality.
A month ago, the Trai ruled against the Free Basics programme of Facebook, leaving a level playing field for all players and carrying on web neutrality.
Telecom regulator Trai last week said if regulations on punishment may be amended and it will obey the Supreme Court order asking it to look at the specialized facets of calls falls.
“No service provider shall offer or bill discriminatory tariffs for information services on the grounds of content,” the Trai had said in a much-awaited regulatory order on discriminatory pricing of information content.
“No service provider shall enter into any arrangement, understanding or contract, by whatever name called, with any individual, natural or legal, that’s the result of discriminatory tariffs for information services being offered or billed to the customer on the grounds of content,” the watchdog had said.
Before last week, the Supreme Court requested the regulator to take into account the documents dealing with specialized features of call falls on whether it could consider amending regulations to impose punishment on telecom companies and apprise it of its stand.
