Google, Amazon, and other big service providers that store vast amounts of information that is private, confront the likelihood of having to report important security blunders to national authorities in the EU.

It is expected the new rules will result in a more cohesive way of security measures to the other side of the 28-member-state bloc.

“Parliament has pushed hard for a harmonised recognition of essential operators in energy, transportation, health or banking areas, that will need to fulfil security measures and notify major cyber events,” Schwab said.

Critical service businesses must ensure infrastructure is strong, and report important events.
“Member states may also need to work more on cybersecurity–which is indeed more significant in light of the present security situation in Europe.”

MEPs, approved by 34 votes to two the proposed rules, that will exclude smaller on-line players from the extent of the directive.

In the event the measures get the go ahead, EU member states will soon be asked to identify crucial operators of networks and essential services, including online banking.

Later this year a complete plenary vote on the planned rules is anticipated. Member states will have to transpose the directive into national laws if approved.
