Here’s the fundamental theory: In these chatrooms, you can plan trips, talk about common interests and, needless to say, link each other to YouTube videos that are related and Google search results.

While Spaces joins several advanced characteristics that are independently, its largest issue is that nobody appears to understand what the program is really for. Around on Hacker News – a place you’d expect to be receptive to new experiments – the vast bulk of early answers have nearly universally expressed puzzlement, maybe outright disbelief.

Which is exactly the shortcoming in a world of Spaces where programs are now increasingly specialized. Snapchat and Instagram are constructed around sharing user-created pictures and videos. Slack is that, but for company and work. The most successful social uses of the day are arranged around an individual, committed goal.

Spaces isn’t that. Spaces is a social program that is trying to find a goal. And it is unclear it will be easily given one by Internet users.

“From book clubs to house hunts to weekend excursions and more, getting pals into exactly the same program can be challenging,” Google said. “Sharing things usually includes jumping between programs to copy and paste links. Group dialogues usually do not remain on subject. . . We needed to develop a better group sharing expertise.”

It is accurate: So is attempting to locate that one line of text from a hundred chats past. And they have their loyalists. E-mail is preferred by many people. Evernote is used by others. Others use Google’s own products, like Spreadsheets or Google Docs.

That Google obviously considers the proper way to fix this non-issue is with another program indicates the search giant is trying to find The One Social Program to Rule Them All, when the remaining part of the Internet has moved on. We are deep into the next generation of social networking, where general purpose socializing has transitioned to more unique, siloed kinds of socializing.
