LinkNYC will begin examining free WiFi hotspots in Nyc this summer, but it is not at all clear who’s supplying the infrastructure for this “first-of-its-type communications network.” And no one involved in the job is speaking… yet.

Old payphone websites are turning into new high speed WiFI hotspots with kiosks that additionally offer outside advertising space and city info services. A consortium of firms jointly called CityBridge is heading the job, but in a recent turn, a group of investors headed by Sidewalk Labs — have united and obtained two of these organizations — Control Group and Titan. Sidewalk Labs was established in early June with backing from Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) and is being run by former deputy mayor of New York, Dan Doctoroff.

The LinkNYC model definitely fits in nicely with several the companies of Google, with advertisements on top of that list. Many have supposed overly about how Google might unite future similar installations in additional cities and other recent wireless attempts.

Transit Wireless, which supplies wireless technology for New York City subway stations, was designed to be in charge of the network infrastructure of LinkNYC. But, the firm is not recorded anywhere on the CityBridge web site now*, nor does Transit Wireless reference LinkNYC on its site.

This summer, first user trials with the LinkNYC kiosks are scheduled to start, with real installations planned for the autumn.

Additional investigation on connectivity for the job generated a flow of non-responses.

He was referring to the news release announcing the acquisition of Titan and Control Group, which have been unified into an organization called Intersection, financed by Sidewalk Labs and others.

When the LinkNYC job is finished, it’ll support up to 10,000 WiFi kiosks throughout New York the and offer of City’s five Internet speeds up to a gigabit. Between 400 and 500 kiosks should be set up by the end of the year, and WiFi service will soon be free to visitors and residents alike, thanks to marketing sales.
