Comcast establishes 1 terabyte info limit for Chicago-area web customers

Comcast is placing a toll booth along the net superhighway, but just the most heavy binge-watchers and gamers will probably get there.

The information use strategy, which Comcast dubbed the “terabyte web experience” in an e-mail to Chicago-area customers Thursday, changes less than 1 percent of web users, the firm said.

An unlimited data use strategy is also available for an additional $50 per month.

“Customers who purchase the infinite strategy have the reassurance to do whatever they would like to do online,” Comcast spokesman Jack Segal said Friday.

The typical Comcast customer uses about 67 GB per month, based on the firm.

Comcast executed use-based pricing in a few of other cities, establishing a 300 GB info limit. Monthly about 10 percent of customers consistently surpassed the limit.

In April, the limit was increased to 1 terabyte after remarks was given by customers during trials.

Comcast has rolled out information use strategies to almost 25 percent of its customers, with the inclusion of Chicago, Segal said.

Analyzers say as consumers cut the twine on conventional TV subscriptions in favor of on-line streaming services like Netflix and Hulu getting more cash for broadband use will be critical for Comcast and other cable providers.

Providing service that is quicker — a precedence for Comcast — is enhancing the web experience for customers, but it may also enable more of them to bump up against the information limitations.

Comcast has several initiatives in place to bring gigabit net speeds to Chicago. A modem that is new is being examined in the marketplace, which allows for 1 gigabit per second speeds on the present Comcast infrastructure. It should be accessible to Chicago-area customers in the third quarter, Segal said.

Costs never have been set for the Chicago marketplace, Segal said.

Competing supplier AT&T has been beefing up its high speed offerings in the Chicago region since found its GigaPower Internet in June 2015.

AT&T also has information use limitations, as do smaller providers like Suddenlink, Mediacom and Cable One.

In Chicago, AT&T’s information limits range from 300 GB to 1 TB, based on web speed. Unlimited data plans cost an added $30 per month.
