Clinton e-mail domain name shows attempt for obscurity and security, say specialists

The private e-mail infrastructure made by Hillary Clinton after she left the State Department uses several techniques to hide its place along with some classy security shields to protect it from hackers, cyber security specialists have told the Guardian.

An overview of its present attributes supplies clues regarding the owner’s thinking regarding obscurity and the security of HillaryClinton data, though she ran her issues while in office stays less well understood.

John Bumgarner, a senior security investigator, said the site that’s now up and running for the e-mail domain name “clintonemail.com” is hosted by Network Solutions and seems to be a parked page. With the picture of a few dice rolling on a board that is green, it resembles the kind of page that someone might utilize to function web adverts for children’s games.

Its present IP address is part of an independently designated netblock consisting of 14 different IP addresses, registered to a private person dwelling in Redondo Beach, California. That’s where Bill Clinton’s half brother, Roger Clinton, lives.

Yet when Bumgarner carried out a hunt to track the clintonemail.com domain name, it seemed to be routed through New York.

“The only reason someone would need to do some of this stuff is if they did not need folks to understand what they were doing,” Bumgarner said.

The service now deployed is comparatively well shielded. The netblock is supplied by Internap Corporation (Inap), a high performance web infrastructure provider that helps businesses formulate computer systems.

Additionally, it’s equipped with MXLogic, which screens incoming e-mails for viruses. Though there isn’t any evidence that any of the data is encrypted, which will add a further degree of protection, the mixture of the screening for malware as well as the high end Inap hosting indicates that security is taken quite seriously under present organizations.

“Someone is doing their due diligence to look over the system is shielded from virus, Trojans and other risks,” Bumgarner said.

Jonathan Mayer, a computer scientist at Stanford University, said historical records supplied some evidence the server might have been found in the Clinton house near Chappaqua, New York. Either the server was moved or the data was rerouted.

Mayer said it was not possible to tell from evaluations on the server that was historic whether it was well secured against hacker attack – a crucial question given the aggressiveness of the cyber threat as well as the susceptibility of Clinton’s job from countries like China.

“It is possible the server was well secured,” Mayer said.

Mayer included that guess that Clinton had created a “homebrew” net system was “clearly erroneous”, at least when referring to the present layout of the service.

President Barack Obama told CBS News on Saturday that he learned through news reports whilst serving as Clinton’s secretary of state that he had used a private e-mail account.

US secretary maintains that his management remains the most guileless management ever and said he was happy that she’d instructed e-mails about official company be divulged.
