Bangladesh on Thursday lifted a prohibition on Facebook, three weeks after it was visited for security reasons in the nation that was stressed, but cellular messaging programs stayed barred, the telecoms minister said.

The authorities ordered WhatsApp Facebook and Viber blocked after two opposition leaders lost their appeals against the death penalty for war crimes perpetrated during the 1971 independence struggle.

The pair were hanged after, hiking anxieties of opposition unrest in a nation already reeling from fatal attacks by suspected Islamist militants.

“As per recommendation from the house ministry, we’ve given directives to each of the telecom providers to unblock Facebook instantly,” Halim told reporters in Dhaka.
