Bangladesh Lifts Ban on Facebook

Bangladesh on Thursday lifted a prohibition on Facebook, three weeks after it was visited for security reasons in the nation that was stressed, but cellular messaging programs stayed barred, the telecoms minister said.

The authorities ordered WhatsApp Facebook and Viber blocked after two opposition leaders lost their appeals against the death penalty for war crimes perpetrated during the 1971 independence struggle.

The pair were hanged after, hiking anxieties of opposition unrest in a nation already reeling from fatal attacks by suspected Islamist militants.

“As per recommendation from the house ministry, we’ve given directives to each of the telecom providers to unblock Facebook instantly,” Halim told reporters in Dhaka.

Bangladesh briefly barred messaging Viber and services Tango in January as soon as they became a favorite way of mobilising large quantities of activists for anti-government demonstrations.

A court last month rejected appeals by Ali Ahsan Mujahid and Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, who were found guilty of atrocities.

Similar convictions in 2013 activated the nation’s most deadly violence since independence, with some 500 people killed – mostly in clashes between authorities and opposition activists.

Bangladesh is, in addition, stressed after a number of recent attacks blamed on Islamists, including the murders of two foreigners as well as the hacking to death of a publisher as well as four atheist bloggers.
