Canada’s High Speed Internet Costs Compare Globally
Canada’s High Speed Internet Costs :
The continuing tug of war between Canada’s its large telecoms and independent internet service providers has come to the fore over the continuing fight for access to high speed infrastructure.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission ruled in 2015 that the country’s telcos would need to open up their high speed net cables to smaller rivals for resale to consumers.
CRTC late last month and by the national cabinet in May denyed Bell appeals of that determination.
But the large suppliers did take some comfort in the 2015 opinion because it’d enable them to charge fees for sharing the infrastructure.
But Rogers told the Financial Post that its rates represent its investment in constructing the high speed networks and increased prices from increasing net traffic.
While it’s not clear whether the CRTC will approve the rates, in light of the claims here’s a look at Canada’s high speed Internet costs now stack up with other countries in the developed world.
The price of high speed.
According to information from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Digital Economy Prognosis 2015, Canada is 17th out of 34 nations when it comes to cost per megabit per second of speed that is advertised.
Canada also ranks badly in the OECD’s evaluation of broadband connections with rates of 102.4 Mbps and above.
As web traffic continues to increase this added bandwidth is crucial.
