Wearables deemed top security risk for the IoT

The survey of IT professionals in EMEA and North America sponsored by company facilities, and undertaken by IT sector professional network Spiceworks supplier Cox Business, shows that almost 90% of IT professionals consider the IoT creates privacy and security issues at work.

A majority of IT professionals – 53% – consider wearables are the largest IoT security risk followed by video equipment physical security at 46%, at 50%, and appliances 45%.

However, while almost 90% of IT professionals consider the inflow of associated “things” creates privacy and security issues at work, based on the survey just one in three organisations is preparing for the impact IoT could have on their company.

And, based on Spiceworks its 2014 IoT report – The Apparatus are Coming’ – organisations have almost doubled, rising from 13% to 24%, with IT professionals studied admitting the existence of appliances, electronic peripherals, detectors, and linked video equipment had also improved.

This latest survey from Spiceworks, ran in March reveals IT professionals are facing another combination of challenges as more devices are connecting to corporate networks.

IT professionals were also asked to show their largest security concerns about IoT apparatus at work, while 70% said adequate security measures are not being implemented by some IoT manufacturing companies and 84% support more entry points into the network was concerning. Furthermore, 68%of IT professionals said 66% and default passwords said the deficiency of IoT standards was concerning.

“IT professionals are aware that their organisation is set by more end points into the network at risk, but many companies are identify possible dangers and ’t equipped to handle IoT apparatus.”

Spiceworks says the survey also found that, when requested to disclose who determines whether to support IoT apparatus, 50% of respondents said the CIO and IT department direct the conversation and 6% said senior technology leaders, the CTO, and development. Nonetheless, 31% of IT professionals said adding IoT apparatus is’t directed by one person or group.
