The new ‘Passive WiFi’ uses up 10,000 times less electricity

In an attempt to control battery drainage as you use Wifi to play games or watch films, a team of engineers including Indian-source research workers has demonstrated it is likely to create Wifi transmissions using 10,000 times less electricity than conventional systems.
“We needed to see if we could reach Wifi transmissions using virtually no power in the slightest. That’s essentially what ‘Passive Wifi’ delivers.
“Passive Wifi” can for the very first time broadcast Wifi signals at bit rates of up to 11 megabits per second which can be decoded on the billions of apparatus with Wifi connectivity.
These speeds are lower in relation to the maximum Wifi speeds but 11 times higher than Bluetooth.

Besides saving battery life, wireless communication that uses virtually no electricity will help empower an “Internet of Things” reality where family apparatus and wearable sensors can communicate using Wifi without worrying about electricity. “All the networking, heavy lifting and electricity-consuming pieces are done by the one plugged-in apparatus. The passive devices are simply reflecting to create the Wifi packets, which is a truly energy-saving method to convey,” explained co author Vamsi Talla, electrical engineering doctoral student. To reach such low-power Wifi transmissions, the team basically decoupled the analog and digital operations included in radio transmissions. The Passive Wifi design puts the analog, electricity-intensive functions – like creating a signal at a frequency that is special — to one device in the network that’s plugged into the wall.
