Internet providers launching race bragging rights, for speed

Most residents will not even come close to wanting that bandwidth, business specialists said, and even the families bustling with music downloading and film streaming would readily be pleased with around 100 mbps. But that means little to Comcast and other Internet providers, which are aggressively rolling out gigabit– –offerings mbps 1,000 national .

“Let us face it: The two-gigabyte merchandise is a market product,” said Tim Collins, senior vice president of Comcast Cable’s Heartland Region.

“Most folks do not want two gigabytes in their houses now, but we are a huge believer in staking that claim, that superiority place early.

That has expanded its fiber-based GigaPower offerings to many this year, 15 marketplaces, and intends to almost double. Google Fiber Cox, and other ISPs are making similar moves all over the country but have not announced plans to enter this marketplace.

For peak use, when big file transmissions push against the limits on speed capacity, the average is 53 mbps.

America is no laggard in either group, ranking 19th and 22 nd out of more than 130 nations. The worldwide leader in that group, the typical peak rate in Singapore, is only under 100 mbps. Why are ISPs here clamoring to offer 1,000-mbps speeds?

“Lots of this is simply the promotion of the firms, I consider,” said Jeff McCall, a professor of communications at DePauw University.

“These Internet suppliers can not ever have an image that they’re behind the times technologically. They can not tell customers, ‘Well, there is new higher-speed technology accessible, but we do not always need to supply it.'”
