IBM partners with Canonical to bring Ubuntu Linux on mainframes

IBM has declared that it’s partnering with Canonical to construct a brand new mainframe running Ubuntu Linux known as the LinuxOne. The foremost is called Emperor and runs on the IBM z13. The other is a smaller mainframe known as the Rockhopper made for a more entry level mainframe buyer. This new strategy includes a monthly subscription pricing model, heavier engagement with other open source projects, giving a huge cache of mainframe code to open source and participating in the recently established Open Mainframe Job. Ross Mauri, general manager for IBM Systems stated the firm lands between 10 and 20 mainframe customers a quarter. By offering an adaptable, cloudlike pricing model, it’s expecting to land more customers who might have been scared away formerly by the upfront cost of investing in a mainframe.
