How Reggaeton Defies Net Limitations by Cuba

The language can be explicit, the lyrics could be considered wrong, and the music genre was prohibited completely by Raul Castro’s management. So do performers from the now-omnipresent Cuban Reggaeton picture locate celebrity, let alone spread their music in a state where internet connectivity relies on high-priced, government-approved WiFi hotspots that are not reliable and inundated at best?

Photographer Lisette Poole was living for about a year when she found Reggeaton music permeating Cuban culture in Cuba. In Cuba in general I discovered that folks are quite reachable, even if they can be truly well-known,” Poole tells TIME. Despite the constraints on connectivity, artists can create videos and tunes that circulate “all over Cuba within a few days,” says Poole. She says distribution and the development of content that is Reggaeton is in ‘steady flow.

The photographer started seeing the state as a teen and took primary residence up there in late 2014. She says she’s inspired to look at the state objectively to show that is “ Cuba the manner as I’ve seen it residing there that it actually is. I feel like revealing Reggaeton is only part of that
