Microsoft, Facebook Team Up to Build Undersea Internet Cable

Facebook and Microsoft on Thursday declared they’ll work together to put a high speed Internet cable across the underside of the Atlantic Ocean.

A new, sub-sea “MAREA” cable was anticipated to be finished by late 2017, with the objective of satisfying growing demand by the technology firms’ customers for rapid, dependable data connections.

MAREA will be the maximum-capacity sub-sea cable with an anticipated capacity of some 160 terabytes per second of information, based on the firms.

The 6,600 kilometer cable system will also be first joining the United , running Europe States and southern from Northern Virginia to Bilbao, Microsoft, Spain and Facebook said.

From Spain, the information network will link to hubs in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and other parts of Europe, based on the firms.

Facebook and Microsoft said they are working with international communications firm Telxius, possessed by Telefonica, on the cable job.

“We need to do more of these jobs in this way – enabling us to go quickly with more cooperation.”
