Google CEO Protects Europe Warns on Brexit

Google CEO Sundar Pichai reach back at accusations the worldwide Internet giant warned of the possible side effect from Britain leaving the EU, and did not pay enough taxes in Europe.

“Based on the arrangement of present tax law, most firms pay the majority of their taxes within their home countries.”

He said that authorities would need to take actions if they needed to ensure more sales stayed at home, and that Google honored the laws on the books.

“Just the additional development of the international tax system by politicians can bring about better results,” he said.

Asked about a Brexit or British departure from the EU following last month’s watershed referendum, Pichai underlined the relevance to Google of a “coordinated digital marketplace” in Europe.

“This complexity makes greater participation hard, which likewise plays out in investment,” he said, stressing however that big businesses were better able to cope with such problems than small businesses.

European officials have raised questions about the tax liabilities of businesses including Amazon, Google and Apple. Some companies have taken advantage of tax breaks offered from Luxembourg, Belgium and Ireland.

Google’s offices in Madrid were sought in a tax probe in June, just over a month after the Internet giant was raided by authorities in a similar investigation in Paris.

New antitrust charges also filed against Google last week, piling pressure on the business over the alleged mistreatment of its market dominance.
