BREIN THREATENS PIRATES WITH HIGH ‘FINES’, WARNS VPN USERS

These pirates can anticipate resolution demands of several tens of thousands of euros if they’re exposed, as well as the group intends to penalize VPN users even more difficult.

In the last few months the group has declared aims to take these efforts a step farther and has tracked down several prolific uploaders.

Now the national data protection authority allowed BREIN permission to gather the IP addresses of pirating BitTorrent users, permitting the group to strategy uploaders on a more comprehensive scale.

Based on BREIN Director Tim Kuik they’re prepared to track and crack down on bigger groups of filesharers.

“The trial run is behind us and we’ll now begin accumulating IP addresses and signs.

The enforcement attempts will never be restricted to pirates who share a large number of titles. BREIN says that individuals who are located sharing recent names often are at risk also.

Additionally, BREIN notes that its enforcement measures aren’t restricted to a particular content type. People who share movies, TV-series games, music, novels and are at risk, Kuik warns.

Individuals who decide not to settle can look ahead a full blown court case.

“If there’s no resolution, we’ll go to court to claim full damages and prices.”

Several ISPs have declared that they are going to not hand around anything with no court order, so this problem will need to be ironed out in court before BREIN can carry on.

Additionally, there is a substantial group of file sharers who conceal behind VPN services, a lot of which can not identify their customers through an IP address. BREIN is not unaware of this but notes that it is possible to identify VPN users.

Those VPN users who do get found using a service that is safe can anticipate a higher resolution demand than frequent users.

“VPN services can see what you do, you run a security threat and it’s also possible you could still be identified, that will lead to a higher ‘great’,” Kuik says.

Based on BREIN, VPN users should think about paying for content that is legal, rather than paying for anonymous access to content that is prohibited, so that creators get correctly compensated.

It is clear that its language is toughening. For a long time the Netherlands was considered a safe haven for file sharers, but this will be true if left up to BREIN.
